Rachel Berry
Rachel started out Glee as one of the most unpopular girls at McKinley High and for obvious reasons. Since then Rachel has bonded with most of the members from Glee club and is dating Finn. However, so far in season 2, Rachel has become an unflattering person to me. Last season, I would look forward to what Rachel was going to do next; whether it was how to get Finn or how her relationship with Jesse St. James would go once she found out he was a double agent. I would even look forward to how she was going to interact with her newly found mom. Rachel also used to be the show's "true main character." I believe that Rachel was supposed to be unflattering and be the person no one liked, and would gradually be accepted by everyone and have more friends. Even if Rachel was not supposed to be loved by all the Glee members by the end of season 1, I would imagine they would still write her quirky and annoying, but lovable. I couldn't help but feel bad for Rachel after everything that happened with her mom and Jesse. This season, Rachel started out as a very selfish girl who basically pranked a possible Glee club member to joining their rival team. She was very attached to Finn and didn't want him to join the football team again for her own selfish reasons. Now, I don't think Rachel should be all nice and perfect, but I don't think she should be written to make the audience not like her completely.
Glee Season 2 (So Far)
Now with my problem with Rachel also ties into my dislike for season 2 so far. I believe a problem Glee has this season is that it doesn't have direction. Last season we saw the Glee club come together to practice for Sectionals and Regionals. They had conflict on the road to Sectionals and Regionals that sabotaged their chance to enter or even win the competitions. Now it is like each episode is its own stand-alone episode. I believe another problem is that the show focuses a lot on themes. Already early into the season we have had an all Britney episode and we had the Rocky Picture Show episode, and also the all spirituality episode. Don't get me wrong, these episodes are fun to watch, but I believe the show does best when it innovates and adds creativity to songs and has had heartfelt episodes, such as singing "Keep Holding On" to Quinn. The show, I feel, is becoming a big music video due to this. Another key missing to Glee is conflict. Last season, we had Sue spill the club's song list to competing schools, Quinn getting pregnant and saying it was Finn's, Mr. Shuester and his wife, Jesse St. James acting as a double agent, and many more. And, those have been conflicts that weren't resolved in one episode. The only conflict I have seen in season 2 is Mr. Shue wanting Emma, and Artie trying to win back Tina. I believe the only interesting conflict that has happened in season 2 is when Rachel indirectly pushed Sunshine to Vocal Adrenaline. I would like to see the Glee club thinking of ways they can improve to beat Vocal Adrenaline at this year's Regionals and have some conflict between characters again.
I still enjoy Glee very much, however I just want it to focus on being a story again and not a music video. Would love to see your opinions on Rachel and season 2 so far in the comments. Until next time!
